Art for Art's Sake
Menu
What does that mean... art for art's sake? A philosopher of the early 19th century may have coined the phrase when he said, "We need religion for religion's sake, morality for morality's sake, and art for art's sake." In the 1870's --an era when art, to be "good", was required to imitate life and hold a mirror to nature-- James McNeill Whistler disgusted and enraged conservative art critics by promoting the Doctrine of Art for Art's Sake --that is, "abstract values in painting, such as form and color, should exist for themselves, not as accessories to the imitation of nature or storytelling." Here it means simply, "a passion for art in all its forms... to see it... to study it... to make it ... to share it with others..."
So, welcome to Art for Art's Sake --a site created for the sake of gratifying my passion for art and for no other reason in particular...

Here you will find gallery space displaying some of my work in the computer medium. I've used filters and effects available in Paint Shop Pro, Adobe PhotoPaint, and other art programs to manipulate color, form, and composition of a computer generated or photographic image. Also in this gallery are first efforts in Bryce and Vue d'Esprit.

The Internet offers opportunities to see the work of the great and not-quite-so great masters, cultivate a knowledge of art history, and discover the new and exciting work of contemporary artists. Here is a collection of links to some of my favorite museums, special exhibits, and galleries on the World Wide Web.

I just LOVE designing web pages. But I finally figured out that my favorite part of the job is making the backgrounds and buttons. Sure, I can do content --but I could do the artzy stuff all day long, and sometimes do! "So," I thought, "why not do a web site where I can make lots of backgrounds and buttons? I'll do the themed sets, let someone else do the content..." Well, here it is.

This is my collection of links to information about making web pages and working with Paint Shop Pro and other art programs. There are also links to sites that offer free counters, guestbooks, applets, and anything else I could find that might be helpful.
